Coretta Scott King Award Book Club

Celebrating the African American experience through reading!

Kids in grades 1-9 are invited to join the Book Club that meets at the CEJJES Institute's Conference Center on the first Saturday of each month.

Grades 1-3

At each meeting, this group reads aloud a picture book that the children were assigned to read with their parents at home and then plays a game or makes a craft to reviews the lessons in the story.

Grades 4-6

At each meeting, this group discusses the chapter book that the children were assigned to read at home. The group reviews the characters, theme and main ideas. Team activities such as scavenger hunts or Challenge are used to focus on the lessons in the story.

Grades 7-9

At each meeting, this group discusses the book that the teens were assigned to read at home. Young adult themes are discussed.

A few important reminders about the Book Club.

Parents are important to the success of the Book Club. Parents stay with the children during the meeting and participate in the activity. Parents also volunteer to lead the discussion groups.

Children should read the assigned book before the meeting. The books can be purchased tax-free through the Book Club or children are encouraged to visit the library to borrow the book.
